misuse of science

The Washington Post has an article on the misuse of science in changing pollution regulation.

Space Program

Is anyone watching the History Channel's programs on spaceflight? I don't watch TV myself, so I can't comment on the programs, but there is an interesting article about the issues raised here. It looks like I am going to teach my course on the History of the Space program next spring. Do you think students are still interested? Is there public support for a continuing government space program?

Webroll

The list of students that should now appear to the right is I believe current with all the weblog addresses I have received. I prepared it using a service called Blogroll. It will highlight the most recently updated blogs, but unfortunately it doesn't do so automatically. If you want your blog to show up as updated you need to let Blogroll know when you have updated it, by going to the ping form. I put a link to the ping form above the blog roll so you can find it easily. (If anyone can figure out how to set up automatic pinging in Blogger without paying for the premium service I would love to learn.)

science and technology

It isn't easy in the modern world to differentiate science and technology. How would you define the line between what is science and what is technology? What are some of the possible combinations?

computer frustrations

The authentication servicer is down at the moment, so no one can log on (updates). Email is also down; I don't know if that has to do with the new virus that hit yesterday. The computer support staff already had a bad week last week trying to install the fix for the MSBlast worm onto every computer on campus. That worm spread directly through the network rather than only when people opened email attachments, so every computer that logged in was infected.

A year or two ago there was no access to the Clemson network from the main campus for the two days before classes started because lightening hit and destroyed the underground cable that carries all traffic from the main campus to the research park where the computers are actually located. It was very frustrating trying to get ready for classes.

As we grow more dependent on technology do we need to learn to be ready for unexpected failures? Or is the fault with a system that could and should be more reliable? An old page about this issue is here

Blackout

Anybody get caught in the blackout? Is this an example of bad management or bad regulation, or as technological systems get more complex are failures inevitable?

Welcome

Welcome to the professor's blog for History 122. I will post here my thoughts on issues relating to science, technology, and society. You can use this as a model or a source of topics to write about in your own blog.
This is the professor's blog for History H 122 in fall 2003.
